ANGELA MERKEL has warned the European Union to prepare for trade talks with Britain to end without a deal. It comes after the deadline for an extension beyond the 31st of December came and went at midnight.
Addressing the German parliament, she said the bloc “must and should prepare for a situation in which an agreement does not happen”.
The German Chancellor claimed negotiations have been accelerated by the EU however in an attempt to secure an agreement in the autumn. Mrs Merkel was briefing the Bundestag on her priorities after taking over the EU’s six-month rotating presidency.
“progress in talks is, to put it cautiously, very limited,” Mrs Merkel told MPs.
