There is a cold and crisp night ahead as temperatures plummet with the arrival of fog, frost and ice – but most areas will be dry and sunny later on Sunday.
Temperatures are set to plummet to -10C tonight as the start of December brings a winter freeze.
Bookies have also slashed the odds on it being the coldest ever December in the UK.
Frost and ice will blanket parts of the UK with it dropping to -10C in rural Scotland, including -6C in Tyndrum.
Elsewhere, in Newcastle it is set to be 0C overnight and -1.6C in the Cotswold town of Winchcombe.
Brits are being warned of potential icy roads and travel disruption in the morning.
BBC meteorologist Louise Lear said: “There was a hard frost overnight, with temperatures in rural Scotland down to -10C.
“Over the next week, it stays cold but largely dry and sunny.
“Down in the south-east, there is a small weather front that is clipping Cornwall that is preventing temperatures falling too low, with a maximum of around 11C.
“The temperatures will be up to 3C at the very best in some areas, with others reaching at most 8C.”
The dramatic weather conditions across Europe has even seen parts of Sweden plunge to almost -30C.
Meanwhile, leading bookmaker Coral make it odds-on at 4-6 for next month being the coldest December on record in the UK.
The firm go 4-5 for a White Christmas anywhere in the UK this year and evens for this winter to be the coldest ever.
“It’s going to be a frosty start to the new month and with temperatures dropping fast, the odds have been cut on it being the coldest ever December in the UK,” said Coral’s John Hill.
