Diane Abbott humiliated over ‘sonic boom’ claim to stop migrants

Diane Abbott’s claim that Priti Patel is planning to use “sonic booms” to scare off migrants trying to cross the English Channel has been branded “rubbish” by the Home Office.

The Labour MP left Whitehall officials scratching their heads after claiming that Ms Patel wanted to use “sonic booms” to deter migrants.

She wrote on Twitter: “Our disgraceful Home Secretary Priti Patel wants to use sonic booms against desperate asylum seekers trying to cross the English Channel in small boats.”

This was quickly dismissed by the Home Office, according to the Daily Express.

“We don’t recognise the claims or anything like that – it’s rubbish.”

A Home Office spokesperson added: “As part of our ongoing operational response and to prevent further loss of life at sea, we continue to test a range of safe and legal options to stop small boats making this dangerous and unnecessary journey.

“However, we have no plans to use ‘sonic devices’ to deter migrants and to suggest otherwise is wrong and misleading.”
