A huge volcanic eruption has begun in Iceland tonight, causing spectacular red skies visible from miles away.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office said eruptions have begun in the Reykjanes Peninsula, after thousands of tremors in recent days.
All air traffic at Keflavik International Airport has been grounded as a result.
Locals are reportedly on standby in case they have to evacuate.
A helicopter with scientific personnel had been scrambled to assess the extent of the eruption, the office said.
The volcano is a seismic hotspot, where more than 40,000 earthquakes have occurred since February 24 – more than the whole of last year.
