Sadiq Khan demands Londoners get to keep their EU citizenship

Sadiq Khan has asked the EU to grant Londoners ‘associate citizenship’ of the bloc so they can continue to benefit from free movement despite Brexit.

The Mayor of London travelled to Brussels today for talks with the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

The Mayor’s ‘associate citizenship’ plan would allow British voters who opt in to keep many of the rights they held before Brexit – including the right to move freely between EU member states.

Mr Khan argued his plan would help pro-EU voters who ‘still feel and want to be European’.

However, the EU will almost certainly dismiss the call because it is likely to fall into the category of ‘cherry picking’ – wanting some of the advantages of membership without taking on all of the obligations.

He said: ‘Like so many Londoners, I am heartbroken that we are no longer a member of the European Union. I want this issue of associate citizenship to be at the heart of talks about our future relationship.’
