Tesco has been slammed after deeming sanitary products ‘non-essential’ during the 17-day firebreak lockdown in Wales. Pictures from one store in St Mellons, Cardiff show barriers blocking customer access to toiletry aisles, leaving shoppers unable to buy items like tampons, sanitary towels and toothpaste.
The supermarket has also come under fire after telling a customer online that she was banned from buying sanitary towels in their stores.
Tesco has since backtracked, saying sanitary products are essential and there had been ‘a mistake’
The issue came to public attention after a woman named Katie tweeted Tesco on Monday asking why she couldn’t purchase sanitary towels in her local store. She wrote: ‘Can you explain why I was told today that I can’t buy period pads as I’m sure they are essential to women ?!!! But I can buy alcohol, it doesn’t make sense’.
