Thousands sign petition demanding prosecution of lawyer who killed fox

More than 19,000 people have signed a petition demanding that the authorities consider prosecuting prominent lawyer Jolyon Maugham for battering a fox to death on Boxing Day.

The QC sparked fury after claiming on Twitter that he killed the fox after it became trapped in the protective netting around his chickens.

The barrister, a specialist in tax law who played a key role in bringing to court a number of legal challenges to the¬†Brexit process, later apologised to anyone ‘upset’ after his social media post sparked widespread condemnation.

A petition about the incident had received 19,200 signatures.

It states: ‘The public interest would be served by a proper investigation and clarification of the law and if appropriate prosecution for this cruel act.’

An RSPCA spokesperson said: ‘We’re aware of a situation regarding a fox, and would like to reassure people that we’re investigating.’
