Transgender Swimmer Lia Thomas nominated for Woman of the Year award

The University of Pennsylvania has received backlash after it nominated Transgender swimmer Lia Thomas for a Women sport’s award.

It has named Thomas as one of two students it has nominated for the National College Athletics’ Association’s Woman (NCAA) of the Year Award. 

The winner will be announced at an NCAA event in January 2023. 

The swimming body FINA issued new guidelines that effectively ban trans female swimmers as a result of the controversy that Thomas triggered.  

But UPenn has decided to nomination of Thomas regardless, despite frequent condemnation from fellow athletes and their families over her success.
